Gaucín
The village of
Gaucín, like many of the white
villages in Andalucía, was one of the frontier villages during the
Moorish reign, and still has a Moorish fort above the village.
Other Moorish and Roman remains can be seen around the village,
such as the Roman fountain in the main village square.
Gaucín has narrow streets, lined with whitewashed houses, covered
with colourful plants, and makes a lovely place to wander through in the
evening before a drink or a meal.
There are several bars and a couple of good restaurants: one cheap and cheerful (£4.00 for a three course meal) and one with excellent cuisine, both thoroughly Spanish. There are small shops and supermarkets – small but well stocked - a bank, post office, and petrol station. There are also a couple of discos open during summer months.
